I did have a look at udev a while ago, I can't actually remember the
reason why I didn't bother with it.  It probably needs a newer kernel
or stacks of stuff changing or something.  It would be much easier
(but not better) to just move anything that needs write permissions
from /dev to tmpfs on a case by case basis.
