If it does compile and won't obviously break anything, go ahead
and commit it. The minor issues you are having can be fixed also
while it's in svn.

Don't be afraid to commit stuff, a version controlled repository
has an inherent safety net. Don't think about it as if there
was a gate in front of the repository that only perfect code was
allowed to pass through.

If you commit it ends up in everyone else's tree automatically
without people having to patch manually, so you'll get more
feedback :)

It was a great idea to ask about the design of the feature
on the mailing list though, as this thread has shown.
We should encourage this behaviour.
