It's 8bit, but as 8bit writes to VRAM don't behave as you might expect,
using 8bit mode from userspace is a pain.  Amadeus: would enabling the cache
for VRAM work?

fbset can change the framebuffer to 16bit mode (actually 15bit colour).

fbi will still need to be modified, as in 16bit mode the DS requires the top
bit to be one.
If you don't know how to do this, submit what you have and we can have a
look.
